Peel It Off
By Jaimal Yogis
Practicing yoga in a room full of hot strangers may sound unappealing—or even downright offensive. But like it or not, from New York City to Salt Lake City, from San Francisco to Atlanta, yogis are baring all on the mat, and business is booming. And the practice is gaining converts.
By her own admission, Judyth Greenburgh is an unlikely candidate for hot yoga. For starters, she's British, and the British, she says, are more private than most. At 41, the five-foot four-inch yogi is no model or hard body either. But since taking a hot yoga class six months ago, she says it's improved her focus and concentration.
"It's like, 'Yeah, I'm hot, and that's natural,'" Greenburgh says. "It's about being at home with your body."
Other hot yogis concur. After a recent class at One Taste Urban Retreat Center in San Francisco, where people of all shapes and sizes packed the studio to strip and stretch, several said hot yoga helped them feel more comfortable with their bodies, allowing them to peel off yet another layer of ego: namely, the one attached to their clothing.
"I'm seeing the beauty in accepting my body," says Sumati Ganeshan, a yoga instructor who was attending a coed hot class for the first time. "It's a practice of honor, dignity, and respect."
Not all hot classes are so high-minded. Aaron Star teaches a class for men in Manhattan, and he admits it carries an erotic charge. "It's a bunch of hot gay men doing partner yoga," he says. Still, he maintains, he's not crossing any line. "I think that a lot of yogis forget that we live in the world," he says. "And living in the world means we have to confront our senses and tame them." Star's first class proved so popular that he now leads men's hot yoga retreats in Hawaii, Costa Rica, and Europe and just released a four-part DVD series, titled Virgin, Strength, Partner, and Tantra.
The coed class at San Francisco's One Taste is sensual, but not sexual. Students meditate with their clothes on, setting a pure intention. Then they enter a separate room where they undress "mindfully."
Meredith Medland leads the class with her partner, and she thinks the mutual respect of their relationship establishes a safe vibe. "There's no 'woo woo' energy," she says. "It's seeing the god in each other. That's what class is all about."
Medland has had a lifelong battle with her body. She once weighed 200 pounds, underwent breast-reduction surgery, participated in a 12-step weight-loss program, and worked with Dr. Phil in the Ultimate Weight Loss Challenge. But teaching hot yoga is what helped her feel content. "It's my deepest desire," she says, "to help people fall in love with themselves through falling in love with their bodies."
Give Your FillMembers of One Taste have created a nonprofit food and clothing donation program called Fill Up America. At a fundraiser on Saturday, December 10, there will be a silent auction of donated artwork from local artists and a hot yoga class in which people are invited to donate their clothes. The proceeds will go to residents of San Francisco's Mission District. For reservations and details, call One Taste at (415) 503-1100.
Yogi bare: Stripping off allows for a more spiritual practice, says instructor

But don't get too excited yet -- this is mostly a male-only trend. And the question remains: Are people ready to shed their clothes, as well as their egos, and let it all hang loose?
The answer seems to be yes. A respectable number of men have signed up to take part in a series of classes from Skyclad Yoga, run by professional dancer and hatha yoga instructor Ron Stewart.
He launched naked classes for guys after waiting in vain for someone else to lead the way.
"I have always had an interest in practicing yoga naked, primarily because when you wear clothes you feel them, and I wanted to just be able to feel my body," he says. "It just seemed quite natural to me that a spiritual and physical practice be done naked."
Stewart, 44, insists that his classes are not designed for exhibitionists and narcissists. In the nude, he explains, the spiritual aspects of yoga are much more central to the practice.
"You drop your ego immediately, which is what yoga is all about. It's about the mind and body, developing the intellectual as well as the physical."
After a trial run in January, Stewart has launched twice-weekly naked hatha classes, which he describes as moderate to challenging.
They take place on the fifth floor of an old heritage building in Gastown which features exposed brick walls and polished wooden floors, but little in the way of mirrors to provide additional distractions. And to ensure there's no commotion on the streets below, the windows are covered.
While a few attendees have admitted to their own inner turmoil before class, Stewart says any tension caused by the exposure of flesh is soon relinquished.
"In the first session, there was a bit of apprehension as to when to get naked," he admits. "But once a few people started to take their clothes off, it was an invitation to everyone. After that first day, it was just natural for guys to just come into the room to undress, set up their mats and often they would just sit and meditate until the beginning of class.
"Once things got going, it was the same as any other class," he says. "It didn't feel like the nudity provided a distraction."
As to the question on the lips of most straight men who have heard about the class: No, it's not a cover for a gay social.
"There is no sort of sexual energy and there is a mix of gay and straight men," says Stewart. "It really felt like the guys were coming together and they wanted to practise yoga. I feel like we're building a bit of a community."
The women of Vancouver, however, don't seem as eager to doff their Lululemons -- nude yoga for women has yet to find much of a toehold here. Clothes-free classes for women were offered earlier this year by instructor Eila Morag, but she had few takers and the classes were cancelled.
The Weights gym on Pender Street held its first nude co-ed yoga class last Thursday and a few women turned up. Stewart also teaches a nude men's class there, and plans are in the works for a nude couples' class.
Gym owner Kurt Luzny thinks it's only a matter of time before the city gets its first all-female nude yoga classes.
"I think women tend to be more private about their bodies, but nude yoga is not about sex," Luzny says. "It is about removing barriers and engaging in a spiritual activity.
"We have put out exploratory feelers about women's classes and, from the response of some of the women that have contacted us, there is definitely interest out there."
With warmer weather on the way, Stewart's students have a suggestion for the next step of the naked revolution.
"They talk about having classes outdoors in the summer, but I'm not entirely sure where we would do that," he says with a laugh. And even if he doesn't get many takers for alfresco yoga in the buff, one thing's for sure -- he would get plenty of spectators.

Doing it in the altogether is what makes this nude yoga practice altogether free from distractions
Some fitness fads require sporty gear and equipment, but the practice of yoga requires only the bare essentials: loose clothes, a mat and time to do the exercises. The latest trend in yoga requires even less. We're not talking about aqua yoga, done in a pool, or disco yoga, set to dance tunes, or "boga," boxing yoga, done with gloves.
No, a San Francisco community center is offering naked yoga, where bare essentials means just that: Men and women are completely nude during the 90- minute class.
This is not the invention of "naked yoga guy" George Monty Davis, who made headlines last year for (legally) striking naked yoga poses at Fisherman's Wharf, nor a "hot nude yoga" class for gay men, popular in Boston, Dallas and Los Angeles, or in any way connected to Internet-sold videos of voluptuous women doing naked yoga on wave-washed beaches with horses galloping by.
No, the new naked yoga class on Sunday mornings at the One Taste Urban Retreat Center on Folsom Street is meant to be transforming, not titillating. That's a concept that American culture, with its taboos on nudity, might find difficult to grasp. The center, which opened 10 months ago, was founded by Nicole Daedone, also a co-founder of 111 Minna Gallery. It offers dance classes and massage, has a small cafe and an art gallery, and hosts various events.
The class is about the challenge of yoga, and about the challenge of accepting -- and even revering -- one's own body.
"It's not a sexual experience,'' said Rob Kandell, the center's business manager. "It's a heart-opening experience."
On a recent Sunday morning, yoga instructor Meredith Medland, 33, gave students a sort of pep talk before entering the classroom, emphasizing the idea of the body as a vessel and getting them to calm their thoughts.
Five women and four men entered fully clothed, carrying their mats. Many were in their 20s and 30s, but some were decades older.
The classroom, on the second floor of the old building, is enclosed on three sides by velvety moss green floor-to-ceiling curtains and a white wall on the other. Caramel-colored wooden floors and exposed wooden ceiling trusses create a natural feel, rather than a clinical or sporty atmosphere.
"As we begin to disrobe, start to notice how you clothe this temple, this body, this thing you own, your home,'' Medland said. "As you take off your clothes, there's a level of precision, of consciousness, in the way you fold your clothes. We're honoring the preciousness, the sacredness, the delicateness of the body.''
The first movements involved stretching arms above the head. Medland, as naked as the rest of the class, faced the group, arms over her head, her patter providing a point of focus for any student distracted by self- consciousness.
"When you lift up, remember you've got these limbs -- now whoosh!" she said, exhaling. "Bring the arms down, bring the head down."
In the unlit studio, two skylights sent soft shafts of white onto the students' bodies, highlighting the curves of their forms as if they were museum statues come to life, moving deliberately and slowly from pose to pose.
Despite the variety in figures, some thin, some heavy, some taut, some sagging, there were no furtive glances at one another's bodies, no signs of arousal, just deep concentration on the tasks at hand: proper alignment, stretching and breathing.
Lying facedown on mats, students pushed themselves up at Medland's urging into the cobra pose, legs and pelvis still on the mat, back arching, torso erect.
"Let yourself feel good,'' she urged. "This is the body you've been given. "Breathing -- breathing -- good! You look great!"
Later, students stood in the warrior position, left knee bent, right leg extended behind, arms extended outward, parallel to the floor. Afterward, they shifted to the floor for a series of backbend-like moves.
"There's a misconception that our pelvis, our pelvic organs, are the hardest place to breathe into, but often it's the heart that is the hardest to open,'' Medland said.
With 30 minutes left in the 90-minute class, she had students lie down on their backs and place their left hand on their hearts. "One taste, one touch, one life, one city, one world, one heart,'' she said.
After class, fully clothed, participants explained the appeal.
Guy Jara, 36, a computer programmer from Brisbane, is getting back into yoga after an 11-year break from the practice.
"I like the sheer vulnerability of having no clothing and letting everything hang,'' he said. "There's no concealing anything anymore. There's no place to hide."
A real estate investor who identified himself only as Ronaldo, 60, said being naked helped him to concentrate on bringing the mind, body and spirit together -- the essential purpose of yoga.
"I've been doing yoga for 14 years and working two times a week with a private instructor, but my problem is monkey mind,'' he said. "I want to be present in the moment, and my mind wanders -- 'Is the class going to be over?' "
For him, being naked helps to keep his focus on himself. "I can see where I wasn't present before and be more with the instructions to guide me into the positions,'' he said. "I could stay in them longer, and go deeper. Being present gives a feeling of timelessness.''
Others liked the fact that being unclothed meant they could see the proper body positioning more easily, and make adjustments more quickly, by watching Medland's husband, Ted McElwee, who acted as a model.
This was the first yoga class ever for Kristin Johnson, 34, unemployed, from San Francisco.
"I wanted to approach yoga from a nonphysical, nonsuperficial way, because a lot of it is about cute outfits and competitiveness,'' she said. "Doing it nude, I thought there wouldn't be any of that. It would be internal, about me.
"Without clothes, I was able to move even more,'' she said. "Man! Not having anything on is so freeing. I don't know if I could do yoga with clothes on."
Her classmates apparently don't take the naked truth too seriously. Everyone laughed.

Striking a pose, stark naked
Though “Hot Nude Yoga” is the name of Aaron Star's exercise class in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood, he insists that his classes are not a meat market in disguise.
"People come to the class to get over being self-conscious," Star said.
For the past few years, naked yoga has been growing in popularity, especially among gay men who are flocking to private yoga studios from Oregon to Los Angeles to exercise au naturel.
Women and straight men, although in smaller numbers, are also getting into the scene. They rave about the sense of community they say practicing yoga in the buff creates and the feeling of freedom they experience.
Naked yoga even spurred the San Francisco district attorney's office to declare that nudity was not a crime. It all started when Georges Monty (aka Naked Yoga Guy) caused a stir at Fisherman's Wharf. In broad daylight, the 58-year-old naturist practiced yoga naked, a move that infuriated some passersby. He was charged with a misdemeanor count of creating a public nuisance but the DA dropped the charges.
In the summer of 2003, a 22-year-old female yogi in Salem, Mass., had no such luck when police received multiple complaints from witnesses who saw her doing nude yoga in Minto-Brown Island Park. She was jailed.
In Manhattan, Wendy Tremayne introduced coed naked yoga in February 2005 in the Union Square area. Tremayne, 38, started the classes at the urging of a group of nudists.
"Personally, I prefer to teach naked yoga than clothed yoga," she said. "I'm being with myself however I am. I am not hiding."
Thom Praxis, a naked yoga teacher in San Francisco, said that enthusiasts of yoga are exploring the freedom of naturism (going without clothes as a social practice) and combining that experience with other activities, including athletics.
In yoga, he said, “You're so busy with engaging your body that you lose sight of the fact you're not wearing any clothing."
Star argues that it does not seem natural to put clothes on.
"Clothes get in the way," he said. "They're cumbersome." Star, 34, has recently launched a line of four DVDs titled "Hot Nude Yoga."
Joseph Doherty is a psychotherapist in California who practices tantra yoga. He says that his naked classes honor body, mind and spirit by blending psychology, Buddhism and tantra yoga in an open, safe and natural state of being unclothed.
"I also wanted a place for gay/bi men to be able to be together naked and honor their maleness that was not about having sex, but that honored our sexuality as a part of the whole of who we are," he said.
Praxis echoed the sentiment. After participating in and teaching nude yoga at various naturist gatherings over the years, he decided to create a class for men in 2001.
"For me, it's the celebration of the body in its purist form, and the healthy athletic camaraderie of community with men," Praxis said.
For students like Clark Shu and David Pasteelnick, naked yoga teaches first and foremost tolerance of other's imperfections and the ability to let go of one’s ego.
Shu, who has taken the “Hot Nude Yoga” class with Star, found the experience to be very challenging in the beginning. Standing in a line full of men waiting to take the class, he said, "freaked" him out.
"But as soon as I entered the studio and saw the practice of letting go of your judgment of another person's naked body or the judgment of your own, I did start to benefit from the practice and felt a new form of energy that I never knew existed," he said.
Doherty says that although his classes cater mainly to gay men, men of any sexual orientation are welcome. The classes are about honoring maleness, not just gayness. While straight males are welcome in Doherty's class, the classes are not coed.
Tremayne, however, says that her coed group benefits from the same sense of community.
"They did not come with a sexual agenda," she said of her students. "They preferred the freedom of being themselves without being judged, even for an hour."
A ballet dancer for many years, Shu said nude yoga helped him to let go of the insecurities that he had about his self-image.
"No room here to try and improve one's appearance with clothing," Shu said. "But certainly a chance to really see what a perfectly placed asana is supposed to look like." Asana is a Sanskrit word that literally means "a seat" but in the practice of yoga refers to a pose or posture.
Star said that men who are afraid of stripping naked for yoga should think of it as a very natural state that clothes can hinder.
For her part, Tremayne is seeking more female students.
"I think women are missing out by being inhibited," she said. "Naked yoga is an open-minded and terrific place for women to explore body acceptance and being that free in a safe environment."
For nude yoga practitioners

Understanding Nude Yoga
Nude yoga, in it’s true sense, is a very legitimate and effective yoga practice and let me tell you something, it’s real purpose has very little to do with sex and eroticism. As I now see that nude yoga has made it’s way to the West, I would like to present this article to help shed some light and clear any misunderstandings on this radical, but valid yoga technique.
Naked yoga in general belongs to a particular sect of Yogis, who have practiced this method for many thousands of years now in India. They are called Naga Sadhus and this title describes well the philosophy and thinking that is central to their approach to yoga and spirituality. The word Naga means naked, and the word Sadhu implied one who has renounced the world completely. Here is then what is means to walk the path of a Naga Sadhu and practice nude yoga.
Naga Sadhus essentially roam the county naked, traveling from holy place to holy place or spend time at ashrams, where they devote themselves to the discovery of their True Divine Nature. The nude yoga they practice can primarily be understood at 2 levels. First, I will explore the "ordinary" meaning behind their naked ways and the benefits this bestows, and then I will go into the more esoteric and symbolic meaning behind what is means to be a naked yogi.
Benefits of Nude Yoga:
1. Renunciation:
The nudity is a symbol of renunciation of all things material on the part of the Sadhus. By renouncing even clothes, they are demonstrating this agreement they have made during their initiation. Of course, real renunciation has to do with renouncing ambition, but even so, this ancient tradition uses material renunciation as a stepping stone towards this final end.
2. Body Awareness:
Nude yoga promotes greater awareness of the body and a greater sense of freedom when practicing yoga asanas (positions). Seeing and feeling the body as you stretch and move from one posture to the next, inspires more mindful practice. The nakedness also removes any sense of restriction that clothing subtly promotes and thus, a greater sense of freedom can be experienced when doing the yoga poses.
3. Psychological Freedom:
Above I mentioned that nude yoga can promote a greater sense of physical freedom, but the real freedom that the sadhus are seeking from their nakedness, is freedom from inhibitions, the opinions of others and any sense of shame about their body. Initially, a naked yogi will certainly feel the judgmental eyes and opinions of others, but in time these concerns evaporate and a care free attitude emerges. Nude yoga is about cultivating this level of psychological freedom.
4. Detachment from the Body:
Even though yoga, nude or otherwise, helps create a vibrant, energetic and powerful body, the objective though is actually detachment from the body. Nude sadhus of the Naga sect renounce sex and embrace celibacy, and learn to face the harsh elements without concern for physical comfort or security, including the freezing cold of the Himalayas where many reside. Both these acts are designed to help break the attachment one has with the physical body and sense organs.
Here I would like to point out that there are other sects which practice nude yoga and embrace the life of a naked yogi as well, but do not necessarily belong to the Naga order per se. An example of these are the Aghoris. They don’t practice celibacy and they often use non-traditional and radical approaches to speed up their path to enlightenment, but although their approach is different, their objectives with the practice of nude yoga are the same as above.
True Meaning of Nude Yoga practice:
Above I explored some of the important benefits of nakedness and nude yoga, but the real symbolic meaning behind nudity is something far deeper. The clothes that a yogi is really looking to free himself of, are the coverings of the 3 Gunas, and true naked yoga means to be free of these 3 sheaths.
The 3 Gunas are a core concept in Vedic and Yoga Philosophy and require significant discussion to understand deeply, but I will provide a brief overview here, in the context of nude yoga, to get you started.
The 3 gunas are Sattva, Rajas and Tamas. For simplicity, you can consider Sattva to be the force of positivity, love and light, Rajas to be the force of activity and change, while Tamas to be the force of negativity and darkness. All manifestation is a play of these 3 attributes. The purpose of yoga is to finally be free of the play of these manifestations and encounter the unmanifested eternal Self. Thus, a true naked yogi is one who has shed these coverings and resides in his pure untouched, infinite nature.
Summary of Nude Yoga Practice
I hope the above gives a more clear picture of what nude yoga is all about and what purpose nakedness serves in spiritual practice. From the point of view of yoga morality, it’s best to keep things simple. That which further attaches you to the body and senses can be considered bad, as it works to imprison you further in the petty world of the ego and time, while that which helps you detach and connect with your higher consciousness helps set you free, and thus can be considered good. Nude yoga, if used for voyeurism and sensual pleasure, will work to bind you more, if though, it’s used as described above, this unusual approach can be an effective vehicle for your spiritual evolution.

Yoga Mats for Nude Yoga
It is recommendable that you practice yoga in a suitable environment and also wear clothes meant for practicing yoga. For example the clothes you wear for yoga should be loose and comfortable. Also it is necessary to put a mat on the floor and practice the different asanas. As such it is very interesting that 'Asana' in Hindi has two meanings. One of the meanings is the particular yoga exercise or posture and the second meaning is a mat on which people sit. A mat gives a very comfortable feeling to the whole body. The best part of yoga is that it can be practiced anywhere and the minimum of props like a mat.
When you buy a mat you should ensure that it is extremely comfortable. It should be big enough to accommodate your whole body comfortably. There are companies that make mats specially for doing yoga. The mats are made with a very comfortable material and are mostly hand woven. In case of other types of yoga such as power yoga there are also sticky mats available for the purpose. The mats can be used for physical positions, meditative positions and relaxation poses.
The mats provide a very comfortable grip to people who do yoga. Also they are firm and at the same time soft so that people don't experience any difficulty while doing the exercises. They are extremely appropriate and snug for relaxation and lying down postures. The mats are easily washable and they also have excellent sweat absorption properties. Yoga Mats are preferred by all people who do yoga simply for the benefits that they offer to them. In fact no yoga session is complete without the use of yoga mats. Yoga mats are available in bright colors and are very attractive to look at. This builds your enthusiasm to do yoga on the whole. It makes each and very yoga session something you always look forward to.
Hence it is very necessary that you order a yoga mat right now. You can order yoga mats on the internet through companies that will be more than happy to ship the mats right at your door step. You may also get good discounts from some companies as well, so don't forget to compare prices of mats of a few companies.
Alternate yoga - Hot Yoga
Yoga has been practiced since 5000 years by people in different parts of the world. Yoga is a long term cure for many diseases and also is important for peace of mind. There are asanas in yoga better known as poses or positions that helps you to concentrate on the well being of different parts of the body. Yoga is rightly said as the union of body, mind and spirit. Practicing of regular yoga leads to inner peace and increased body awareness in addition to strength, healthy body, flexibility and other health benefits
Yoga, unlike medications does not have any side effects and has long term advantages. Yoga can be practiced everyday without any problem but many people prefer to do yoga 4 to 5 times a week and take a break in between. A yoga session lasts anywhere between half an hour to one hour and it all depends on your capacity how much and what type of yoga exercises you can do. It is best to take advice from a yoga instructor when you start doing yoga. The instructor may give you specific advice after having a look at your body.
A new type of yoga called hot yoga is gaining popularity. However Hot Yoga has got a lot of criticisms from people. Actually practicing yoga requires very loose and light clothes as the clothes provide flexibility to the body to do all the yoga exercises successfully. You should refrain from wearing shoes also during yoga but if you are not comfortable doing yoga with hot feet then you can do it with soft shoes or socks. Hot yoga puts forward a point that there will be no hindrance of any kind including clothes when you practice yoga. But many people criticize hot yoga as it diverts the mind and so people are not able to concentrate on their exercises. After all yoga is a serious discipline, there should not be any disturbance of any kind. The main goal of yoga is to achieve a balance between the mind and the body.
Hot yoga refers to practicing yoga without wearing any form of clothing. A nudist environment of people is what differentiates hot yoga from normal yoga. All the asanas are naturally the same in both forms of yoga. The worst thing about hot yoga is that it distracts attention and not many people are comfortable in getting hot in front of others. Moreover it may arouse sexual feelings in people after they see other people hot. The whole purpose of yoga is then nullified. Hence hot yoga should only be practiced if the people in the group will not consider it as any sexual activity and thoroughly concentrate on doing their asanas.
Progression on Nude Yoga
Yoga has taken the world by storm as all the exercises and postures are known to induce immense benefits and well being to the different parts of the body. There are no chances of side effects unlike heavy medication and also the exercises can be done anywhere in a quiet, calm and serene environment. Yoga is rightly mentioned as the union of the body, spirit and mind. Yoga has been practiced almost from 5000 years in many countries the world over.
Yoga requires that you wear loose and light clothes. This is because most of the exercises of yoga involve twisting and stretching and so you should feel comfortable while doing any of the asanas or poses. Also you should not wear any type of footwear when practicing yoga. In case you are not comfortable with wearing footwear then you can wear socks and soft shoes.
There is one type of yoga that has aroused a lot of comments and criticism from people, Nude Yoga. Nude yoga involves doing yoga without wearing any clothes. A nudist setting and environment is the basic difference between nude yoga and normal yoga. The basic objective here is to enable your body to feel as free as possible. You can do all your asanas comfortably without any restriction on any part due to your clothes. There are many people who are not entirely comfortable with nude yoga as it is a relatively new concept. They perceive nude yoga similar to having sex. Some people believe that one should wear at least a loin cloth while performing yoga exercises.
Nude yoga proves to be a distraction to the yogis when they see other nude yogis in the same room. The other thing is that because of the distraction you won't be able to do the yoga exercises comfortably and also you won't be able to feel the true essence of yoga. Yogis should bear in mind that nude yoga is meant to be clean as it practiced for unification of mind, body and soul. Nude yoga should not taken as a sexual experience as then it will kill the very essence of yoga. Nude yoga is not something of an entertainment for people who may derive pleasure from seeing the private parts of other nude people. If you understand the main principle and accept nude yoga with open arms without any negative feelings then nude yoga is just for you.
Nude Yoga - Why Do Yoga in the Nude?
By Ann Pizer
Doing yoga in the nude is becoming increasingly popular, and it's not just some naked stretching in your living room. Though not quite mainstream yet, nude yoga classes are being offered in diverse settings, including yoga studios and community centers, as well as through private clubs. As you might imagine, the venue of the class sets the tone and helps determine the clientele. There are many different motivations for trying nude yoga, though a common thread is developing an acceptance of the body in its natural state.
Now Playing at Your Local Yoga Studio
Nude yoga classes offered at yoga centers tend to be co-ed, with an emphasis on practicing unencumbered by the confines of clothing. The style of instruction may vary, depending on the teacher.
Devotees find liberation in practicing naked in a safe environment, which they insist is strictly non-sexual. The room is often dimmed to make students more comfortable and clothing is sometimes removed ritualistically. Many get a thrill from dabbling outside of society’s norms, as well as enjoying greater freedom of movement and liberation from the tyranny of cute, matching yoga outfits.
Members Only
Private groups that come together to do yoga in the nude tend to cater to gay men. Although these groups have some of the same interests as those mentioned above, notably accepting the body, freedom of movement, and the lure of the forbidden, the atmosphere in these classes can get sexually charged. Classes, which are usually taught by certified yoga instructors (though this is unregulated given the private nature of these organizations), often include partner work, so a certain level of comfort with touching other naked men is a must. And while wild orgies may not break out, most admit that it is kind of a pick-up scene.
Is Nude Yoga For You?
If you are very comfortable in (and showing) your skin, you will probably feel right at home in a nude yoga class. However, nude yoga advocates feel that students who want to work on their body images stand to benefit the most.
Practicing Naked Yoga
There are four main methods of practicing naked yoga: self-directed nude yoga practice, nude partner yoga, private naked yoga lessons, and group naked yoga classes.
Self-directed nude yoga practice
Self-directed naked yoga is as simple as taking off your clothes and doing the yoga you normally do, whether a vinyasa flow, holding poses, or some combination. Depending on the type of yoga you practice, pranayama and meditation may also be part of your naked yoga session.
Beginners and advanced yoga students alike can benefit from watching a yoga DVD during their self-directed practice from time to time, but this should not be the basis of a self-directed practice, whether naked or not, for it draws the attention outward rather than inward.
For the solo naked yoga practitioner, an uncluttered practice area is very important. You may want to think beforehand of the poses you would like to do, or simply see what asanas the prana (life force) leads you into. Be sure to leave some time for relaxation, and have blankets nearby in case you get cold.
Nude partner yoga
Practicing yoga in the nude with your partner is a wonderful way to build trust and intimacy. Not only that, but naked partner yoga allows you to explore the asanas in new and different ways, getting deeper stretches with less force.
In fact, many partner-yoga poses you simply can’t do on your own, for they depend on four hands, four feet, or the balancing of body weight of more than one person.
There may be partner yoga classes already in your area, if not, yoga teachers sometimes offer partner yoga weekend workshops or private partner yoga lessons. You can take what you learn home to practice in the nude. There are also a number of quality books and videos on the subject, though some of the videos are more entertaining than instructional.
Private naked yoga lessons
One-to-one nude yoga lessons can be very helpful for your yoga practice, as you will have individualized attention to your breathing and alignment while in different asanas. It is much easier to see alignment without the restriction of clothes.
Practicing nude yoga in front of someone also invites you to drop your inhibitions. At first it is very scary to “open up” so much in front of another person, but this can also be very freeing, inviting us to be more accepting and less judgmental of ourselves. In turn, we become more accepting and less judgmental of others.
To find a yoga instructor who will have a nude practice session with you, your first stop would be the yoga teacher who already leads a naked yoga class. If there isn’t one in your area, you might check advertisements on Craigslist or advertise there yourself. Be careful with such classifieds, however, for they often attract people who are looking for sexual encounters rather than actually practicing yoga.
Other yoga teachers in your area who don’t offer nude yoga classes already may be open to one-to-one naked yoga private sessions, but don’t expect them to shed their clothes (although some may be willing). Remember, this experience isn’t about seeing others free of clothing, it’s about setting yourself free and coming into the uninhibited experience of your own body.
Group naked yoga classes
Whether straight or gay, male or female, group nude yoga classes are highly recommended.
Though it’s a fairly easy thing to practice nude yoga in the privacy of your own home, it’s an entirely different thing to get naked in front of a dozen or more strangers.
Again, it can be liberating, allowing you to let your guard down and stop judging yourself and others by the surface layer. Rather, you feel a part of a close community, sharing deeply.
A quick Internet search will show you the nude yoga classes near you. If there aren’t any, you might look on Craigslist or Meetup.org for other people interested in naked yoga classes. If you can get a few people together, you are more likely to convince a yoga teacher to conduct a clothes-free or clothing-optional class.
Nude Yoga - A Way to Improve Your Sex Life and Satisfy Your Partner
If you find it hard to be naked in front of your loved one, do not have enough flexibility, are embarrassed to keep the lights on while making love or can not last as long as you would like, let's face it... your sex life is hindered. But not to worry. There are things you can do to improve your sex appeal. One of them is to start practicing yoga - naked. Why naked, you ask?
Practicing nude yoga is a way to get in touch with your body and the intimate parts of yourself. It can help improve your sex life, thus increasing the level of satisfaction experienced by your partner.
You start by taking off your clothes consciously and mindfully, creating a sacred space for your practice. You honor the preciousness of your body and of those bodies around you. There is no judgment, no competitiveness. Only appreciation for the naked body.
At first, you may be distracted by the notion of practicing yoga in the nude. With regular practice, you can overcome this and other anxieties, which directly relate to your ability to let go when having sex.
The main objective during your sessions of naked yoga is to help you feel free in your body. You learn to appreciate your physical body - it's beauty and imperfections. When you feel good about your body, you are less inhibited during sex.
Yogis believe sexuality is stored in the hips and pelvis. Poses like Bound Angle (where you sit on the floor with the soles of your feet touching) and Wide-Legged Forward Bend increase blood flow to the hips and pelvis, enhancing your sexual sensitivity and pleasure.
Yoga postures improve sex by strengthening the core muscles around the genitals, thus increasing sensation, duration and comfort. When are you are in a posture, place your awareness on the perineum, the muscle between the genitals and anus. Learning to isolate the perineum increases your sexual pleasure and that of your partner.
Postures that require you to lift your perineum can strengthen the pelvic-floor muscles the way Kegel exercises do. The intensity of your orgasms heighten as you become more aware of how to manipulate this muscle.
Also, yoga poses make you more flexible and increase your endurance. Imagine what you could do if your hips were less tight and your back bend was perfected.
How does nude yoga help improve your sex life?
Increases flexibility so you can easily flow into challenging positions
Builds your strength and stamina
Makes you more confident in and out of bed
Helps open your body
Taps into your sexual energy
Allows you to feel free and enjoy your body
Yoga teaches self-acceptance. If you love your body, you are more comfortable naked and less inhibited during sex. Feeling at ease with your body and bending it in different ways is sexy.

Nude Yoga and Naked Aerobics
We all came in our birthday suits - That's how God made us! Nudity is completely natural. In fact clothes can be disturbing, certainly so in aerobics - it prevents airflow around the body. Clothes also invite - encourage growth of germs - microscopic fungi and bacteria, especially in warm humid areas. People who do naked aerobics can sweat freely people who perspire in clothes are not pleasing to our nose. Those who perspire naturally smell better!
There are benefits of being nude too. For instance, wearing shorts and trousers will raise the temperature of the testicles (in males, of course). This then results in hindrance of sperm growth thereby reducing the sperm shack and male hormones which in turn reduces fertility. It can also cause impotence in both genders. Not just accidental nudity, this is purposeful.
More advantages : No sweaty clothes to wash; Cheaper designer-competitiveness; no fighting for a place with Peter Alexander fashion designer (though I love designer clothes myself). In fact this is goal-orientated, if I may say so because you can concentrate more on building those muscles or firming those gluts.
Naked aerobics yoga is a good exercise and does exist. In fact, quite a few people really prefer doing nude yoga. It helps articulate your natural emotions and let you speak for yourself. Nudity adds to the physical and emotional health of the individual. After all, it’s nice to feel the natural air slapping on your skin and feeling the sweat roughly come out of the inside. As long as you don’t mind dangly bits sometime getting in the way or seeing the nether regions that would be exposed in a simple exercise such as ‘touch your toes’.
Nude Yoga is nourishing and exfoliating. You will feel its effect on your body and notice that the body has changed because you have bared it all. A sizeable number of men and women in the U.S. find nudist yoga as a source of great relaxation and mental peace. There’s a significant increase in nudist yoga practitioners or seekers; so many nudist yoga classes are conducted the world over. There are many naturist clubs and resorts where nude exercise is encouraged and welcomed. There are videos and books available as well to help you pursue this style of exercising.
If embarrassment be thrown to the dogs would you wear clothes at all times?

Nude Yoga Teaches You to Be Comfortable With Your Body and With Being Naked
Although nude yoga, also known as naked yoga, is gaining popularly in yoga studios across the nation, there is still a reaction to the practice as offensive and unappealing. The idea of taking off your clothes in a class full of people can be embarrassing, especially if you were brought up in a household where nudity is shamed. But when practiced in a studio that is supportive or in the comfort of your own home, nude yoga can open up new horizons, drawing you to feel more comfortable in your naked body.
Yoga students have their own reasons for choosing to practice nude yoga. Some want to address insecurities about their body and increase their self-image. Others ride on the thrill of breaking the taboo of being naked in class. While others enjoy the lack of constraint. Most yoga students who practice naked see it as a spiritual experience, a way of stepping out of the conditions established by our society.
In America, naked bodies are associated with erotic sex and sexual fantasies. While in countries like Spain and France, it is not inappropriate to go to the beach topless or in Speedos. As a result of this sense of liberation, most Europeans feel comfortable in their body. And, it does not phase them to look at a naked body. They are accustom to seeing their moms, aunts and girl friends topless at the beach. The European way of relating to the body is natural and embracing. Studios offering naked yoga classes are bringing this comfortable feeling to America - a feeling of gratitude for the body.
Practicing nude yoga is not meant to be a sexual experience. It is not a yoga practice for voyeurs or people who enjoy gawking at other people's genitals. Nude yoga is meant to be transforming. It is a way of getting to know yourself more intimately through different postures.

Aerobics Nude Yoga?
Nude aerobics yoga may sound vulgar, offensive and impossible but it does exists. A lot of people may not practice doing this but there are some who would really prefer doing nude aerobics yoga.
Nude aerobics yoga may imply something not applicable to some culture and society. There are some places that might not respect that kind of practice.
They say nudity is healthy natural. Those who do nude aerobics yoga say that clothes keep them disturbed and it prevents the flow of air in getting inside the body. This may be funny but they really think it that way. For them, wearing clothes is like an excess baggage.
Some can’t even carry out yoga with their clothes on. If this is the case, a lot of people will be intimidated or perhaps be interested in doing nude aerobics yoga.
Somehow, this brings some negative effects in the people or group doing this kind of practice. Some might think that they will take nude aerobics yoga for fun and for some other reasons which goes beyond imagination.
Clothes are considered an art in yoga exercises. Without clothes, where would art take place? Did they say that the body is considered the art, not mentioning nudity?
Nude aerobics yoga is believed to be a clean exercise because people believed that wearing clothes invited and encouraged the proliferation of microscopic fungi and bacteria. This is acquired in warm and humid temperature and circumstances.
When the temperature is warm, they are able to interfere with the natural body temperature of our control mechanism. This makes some of the parts hotter than the others.
People who do nude aerobics yoga can freely sweat and not be absorbed by cotton. This may sound gross but they claimed that people who perspire in clothes smell bad. Sweaty clothes are not pleasing to our nose. That is a fact. But those who perspire naturally smell better.
Wearing shorts and trousers will raise the temperature of the testicles for the male. This then results to hinder the growth of sperm and the male hormones which reduces fertility. This can also cause impotence to both genders.
Looking back to the early generation, nudity was our natural condition as they say. It was also added that nudity adds to the physical and emotional health of the individual.
The main reason why people love doing nude aerobics yoga is because it feels great. A lot of them have alleged the same reasons and they really stand for it. Nude aerobics yoga lets you articulate your natural emotions and let you speak for yourself. After all, it’s nice to feel the natural air slapping on your skin and feeling the sweat roughly come out of the inside.
At first it may be too cognizant to practice the nude aerobics yoga but once you get the hang of it, you will feel that it is nourishing and exfoliating. You will realize after that doing this exercise is not that gross as what you think. Later on you will feel its effect on your body and it wouldn’t be surprising to see that your body has changed because you have bared it all.
It is now time to change your viewpoint in life and go on a different level. After you have experienced all the styles of yoga, try the nude aerobics yoga and have that nice feel.

Nude Yoga
By Ann Pizer
Doing yoga in the nude is becoming increasingly popular, and it's not just some naked stretching in your living room. Though not quite mainstream yet, nude yoga classes are being offered in diverse settings, including yoga studios and community centers, as well as through private clubs. As you might imagine, the venue of the class sets the tone and helps determine the clientele. There are many different motivations for trying nude yoga, though a common thread is developing an acceptance of the body in its natural state.
Now Playing at Your Local Yoga StudioNude yoga classes offered at yoga centers tend to be co-ed, with an emphasis on practicing unencumbered by the confines of clothing.

Although these groups have some of the same interests as those mentioned above, notably accepting the body, freedom of movement, and the lure of the forbidden, the atmosphere in these classes can get sexually charged. Naked yoga
History
In the West since the 1960s, naked yoga practice has been incorporated in progressive settings for well-being, such as at the Esalen Institute in California, as depicted in the 1968 film Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice. Other films with notable segments include The Harrad Experiment and Naked Yoga, (1974).
In New York City in 1998, an American going by the name Jayadev started a group called "Midnight Yoga for Men" where participants practiced "naked before the infinite" in the style of the sadhus. This spawned a plethora of imitators. Many of these male-only naked yoga groups have been associated with the gay community[1], though often not intentionally. Teaching in the Grimbergendubbel Yoga school, Annalise Haigh has been a driving force in the popularization of Naked Yoga in Australia.
One Taste Urban Retreat Center[2][3] made Naked Yoga world famous after it was reported in the San Francisco Chronicle. Teacher Meredith Medland incorporated high level hands on healing/energetic surgery, intuitive body work, vipasanna practice and sensuality to create as she describes it, "a sacred space where groups of people experienced highly transformational experiencing while tapping into their multi-dimensional energies". She is currently living in Santa Barbara, CA teaching "Sexy and Spirited" at the Santa Barbara Athletic Club.
Public environments
Recently, San Francisco courts found that George Monty Davis (aka "Naked Yoga Guy") is not committing a crime by practicing naked yoga in a public place[4], but rather a variant of public nudity.
On June 10, 2006, World Naked Bike Ride Seattle[5] held a brief yoga program at Madrona Park (Seattle), a park in the City of Seattle's Parks & Recreation system. The program, led by Matt Meko of Mekosun,[6] incorporated use of the riders' bicycles in a mid-ride stretch. Matt Meko has offered naked yoga in the Seattle area for men. Mekosun led the yoga for WNBR 2007, again Madrona Park, guiding 57 cyclists with partner yoga and stretching.[citation needed]
Motivation
Many participants find it thrilling to go outside of society’s norms, greater freedom of movement due to the absence of clothing and the liberation from having to wear expensive yoga outfits are common motives to practise naked yoga.
Other motivations are the acceptance of one's own body with all its imperfections and to open one's heart.

Tantric Yoga Positions
The ancestry of the classic Tantra started as early as the Indus Valley civilization. The principal goal is to integrate or unify the male and female perspectives within an individual in order to attain artistic thinking and spiritual conversion. According to the beliefs back then, one way to accomplish that aim is by doing the Tantric Yoga Positions. It is not really similar with nude yoga or naked yoga.
By "Tantra", we mean expansion, while "Yoga" is concentration. Thus, the Tantric yoga positions pertain to directing and increasing a person's energy in order to carry out the goals of tantra. The act is more than just a training or an ordinary workout; it is also a principle of life. The practice can be found on different beliefs and ideas, such as Jainism, Buddhism, Hinduism, and even the New Age Movement.
Tantric yoga positions and the practice itself also consider our universe as an expression of either the Cosmic Mother (Shakti), the Spirit, or even the life force, depending on what faith or religion they based it on. Frankly, it is not easy to become an expert on these because it cannot simply be understood through reading books. A yogi who wants to go through this practice must be fully-dedicated to the guru in order to win it out.
This is how typical tantric yoga positions and courses go: With a mind free from obscene or unclean ideas and yearnings, the guru just sits peacefully. The student, on the other hand, assembles his or her own life force with the use of perception and cognition( not as what nude yoga or naked yoga practice). Then it moves up from the tail bone to the neck, and through the spine, and until it reaches the yogi's forehead. The accumulated results will then eventually be disposed from the forehead to create a frame of light and energy which will unfold until it becomes the size of a human being.
The fictitious frame of light and energy corresponds to the yogi's being and significance. Tantric yoga positions govern love towards it before taking it back to the person's forehead, and back down to the spine. Once the light bounced back inside, the yogi will experience spiritual awakening and enlightenment.
Tantric yoga positions and practices are good resolutions to get away from unfavorable habits like drinking and smoking. Indeed, it is a good way to maintain a good health and live a clean life. Only that, the yogi must have full certainty, purity, boldness, and commitment to the guru.

Naked Yoga Etiquette Tips
· When it’s time to remove your clothes, don’t hesitate. Most nude yoga classes expect all participants to remain in the buff.
· Don’t stare at your classmates. It’s simply not polite.
· Be prepared to work. Nude yoga is just as physically challenging as any other type of yoga class.
· Don’t be afraid to ask questions about the best way to perform a particular pose during nude yoga session.
· Don’t let your discomfort about being naked keep you from enjoying the class.
· Bring your own towel and yoga mat while doing nude yoga practice.
Is Naked Yoga or Nude Yoga Right for Me?
Before you sign up for a class, you’ll want to make sure nude yoga is right for you. Generally, this form of yoga is best suited for people who agree with the following statements:
· I have a serious interest in understanding the benefits of yoga.
· I want to become more comfortable with my body.
· I enjoy trying new things.
· I understand the difference between nudity and sexual behavior.
Many yoga studios in larger communities offer nude yoga classes that are intended for people with intermediate level yoga skills. However, if your studio doesn’t have a class, you might need to speak with your fellow yogis to determine if there’s enough interest to start a program. Since naked yoga is not quite mainstream, there’s a good chance nobody’s thought of offering this option before.
One word of caution: don’t decide to practice nude yoga wherever you feel like it. In 2004, San Francisco’s George Monty Davis earned the nickname “Naked Yoga Guy” for his instance on striking various nude yoga poses on Fisherman’s Wharf.
Is Naked Yoga or Nude Yoga Sexy?
Although sex appeal tends to be a matter of individual tastes and preferences, most participants will tell you that naked yoga or nude yoga isn’t sexy in the least. It’s intended to be an experience that breaks perceived boundaries and encourages yogis to develop a new appreciation for the physical, mental, and spiritual benefits of yoga.
The goals of naked yoga are as follows:
· Encourage proper alignment during various yoga poses
· Promote a sense of openness among class participants
· Eliminate concerns about physical imperfections
· Help participants develop self-esteem
If you are interested in nude yoga with some sex appeal, you’ll want to search for information related to tantric yoga or classes for couples.
What is Nude Yoga?
Simply put, nude yoga is performed by people who aren't wearing any clothes. The poses aren't any different than what you'd find in a typical yoga class and the instructors generally have the same type of training. The only things missing are yoga pants and yoga tops!
